medicine reference book–: What is the single best herbal medicine reference book for a trip to Africa?
I will be joining a development assistance project in Malawi, Africa, very soon. They recommend volunteers bring seeds for their own use, so of course I’m taking some of my favorite medical and culinary herbs… but I would like to be able to look up and perhaps utilize native species as well. Internet access is extremely limited, as is packing space. Does anyone have a recommendation for an extremely complete text I might take along? It needs to be a single book, not a hardbound encyclopedia set, and it needs to cover as many herbs as possible, especially African ones. I always liked the layout of the Herbal Vade Mecum, but it doesn’t cover doses, identification, or all that many African species. Is there anything you know that fits the bill?

I would suggest “THE VITAMIN BOOK”.
It has more herbs than any other book ive seen. Plus all of the details are clear and easy to use. If you read an ingredient in anything you will find it in this books. It has several plants and herbs only found in small areas of the world. There may be a better book out there but this book is the best ive ever seen or heard of. So thats why I bought it.

Waters, Frank B/W Photographs, Line drawings. Book of the Hopi : The First Revelation of the Hopi’s Historical and Religious Worldview of Life, 1963 New York, NY, U.S.A. Penguin Books
Soft Cover Very Good/No Jacket Edition: Reprint Edition, 1977 0-14-004527-9 Gold color printer wrapper. Volume has minor wear. Now in protective wrap. Drawings and source material recorded by Oswald White Bear Fredericks. "In this strange and wonderful book, thirty elders of the ancient Hopi tribe of Northern Arizona – a people who regards themselves as the first inhabitants of America – freely reveal the Hopi worldview for the first time in written form. The Hopi kept this view a secret for centuries, and anthropologists have long struggled to understand it. Now they record their myths and legends, and the meaning of their religious rituals and ceremonies, as a gift to future generations. Here is a reassertion of a rhythm of life we have disastrously tried to ignore and instincts we have tragically repressed; and a reminder that we must attune ourselves to the need for inner change if we are to avert a cataclysmic rupture between our minds and hearts."
