"Rehabilitation of Edentulous Jaws with Conventional and Tilted Implants: Principles and Practices"

In the last decades of the century, demographic increases of the elderly population and a longer life expectancy have been recorded. Therefore age-related tooth loss, anatomic condition of edentulous ridges, psychological needs, decreased performances of removable prostheses over time and predictable results of implant-supported prostheses have increased request for implant therapy.

Materials and techniques have improved continuously and many things have changed from the original Branemark protocol. Immediate function of dental implants is today a predictable reality in different clinical situations. Full arch rehabilitation supported by axial and tilted implants and immediate loading have been documented in the literature with high success rates and patients satisfaction in terms of functionality, aesthetics and phonetics. Inclination of the implants brings surgical and prosthetic advantages when restoring atrophic arches without bone grafts. The aim of this course is to give an overview of these restorations focusing on tilted implants and immediate loading. Techniques will be demonstrated step-by-step as well as clinical cases with video sections to get participants the knowledge to introduce these rehabilitation with success in their daily practice.

"Essentials in Aesthetic Soft Tissue Management and Dental Suturing: Principles and Practice"

(9:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon)

Establishing primary wound closure of various soft tissue flaps is paramount for optimal post-surgical wound healing. Surgical procedures that require clinical flap manipulation such as those used with traditional periodontal therapy, periodontal plastic cosmetic surgery, hard- and soft-tissue regeneration also require excellence in execution and thorough understanding of the various techniques of surgery, suturing, and the materials currently available to ensure the desired clinical results.

This lecture will discuss the rationale of specific suturing techniques and suture materials to aid the clinician in obtaining optimal wound closure and the optimal management of soft tissue manipulation in highly aesthetic areas.

A "hands-on" laboratory session will follow allowing the participant to execute some of the techniques reviewed in the didactical part.

"Dental Aesthetics: The Tooth/Periodontium Continuum"

Porcelain technology has reached a point where shade matching is a relatively predictable procedure, even under the most demanding circumstances. Patients fully expect that an anterior tooth will match the adjacent teeth perfectly.

What is most critical is our ability to create a restoration that will emerge from the sulcus in the same fashion as does a natural tooth. This program will explore when we can achieve this, but more importantly, when we cannot. Crown and root form, root inclination, emergence profile, the periodontal biotypes will be discussed along with classic aesthetic research findings. A full understanding of these factors will enhance our ability to develop life-like restorations whether they be on natural teeth, implants or pontics.

"An Update on Aesthetic Dentistry and Tooth Whitening"

Tooth whitening has become one of the most popular dental treatments available. Candidates for whitening procedures include patients whose teeth are stained by aging, chromogenic foods, endodontic treatment, tetracycline use and smoking or use of other tobacco products. Bleaching is often most conservative treatment for discolored teeth when compared with resin bonded composites, porcelain veneers, or crowns. It offers a simple and economical approach to changing the color of teeth. Success of the treatment depends on a careful diagnosis by the practitioner.

"Orthodontic Preparation in Complex Restorative,

Esthetic and Implant Therapy"

The emphasis in all of the contemporary dentistry is to interact in a team environment to provide excellence in patient care. Recent advances throughout the scope of dentistry, including esthetic/restorative methods and materials, periodontal philosophy including regenerative and orthodontic purposes, and orthognathic surgical advances, have given us the tools to synergistically improve our results with interdisciplinary care.

Comprehensive treatment planning and sequencing of therapy will be emphasized particularly related to interdisciplinary preparation of the complex restorative and esthetic patient. It will stress interaction of surgical-implant/restorative-orthodontic disciplines, in preparation for complex restorative and esthetic therapy.

"Surgical Procedures to Rehabilitate the Compromised Posterior Maxilla"

A recently completed evidence-based review of the sinus augmentation procedures by the presenter has shown the implants placed in grafted in maxillary sinuses experience survival rates similar to or better than implants placed in the non-grafted posterior maxilla. The reviews show that utilizing available evidence to select grafting materials, membranes and implant surfaces is what leads to high success rate.

This presentation will focus on the use of that information in the formulation of treatment plans that lead to the most favorable outcomes in the hands of surgeons engaged in the clinical practice. Further research from a data base of over 1,000 sinus augmentation surgeries performed at the NYU Department of Implant Dentistry will be presented examined in a step-by-step manner that will allow the clinician to achieve maximum results with minimum complications. Handling of intraoperative and postoperative complications will be discussed.

"The Art of a Beautiful Smile"

The initial focus of this lecture appeals to the artistic aspect of what we do through understanding the interrelationship between the face and the smile/teeth in designing a smile. This takes into consideration Facial Reference lines, Golden Proportion, Natural Reoccurring Proportion, Shade selection, Physical Beauty and our interpretation of it, tooth design and its impact on the overall smile, variations of preparation design to accommodate arch length inadequacy and arch length redundancy and the concepts of perception and illusion and how they are used in esthetic smile design. The use of the art form of cosmetic digital imaging (ENVISIONASMILE) in establishing smile design will also be addressed to enable the attendee to understand the importance of the imaging process for case presentation and laboratory communication.

The second half of this presentation will address the removal of temporaries, isolation technique, try-in of veneers, adhesion and cementation techniques, post-operative techniques in creating and producing highly esthetic porcelain veneers and the use of TEK-SCAN computer generated occlusal analysis.

"Advances and Innovations in Ridge Augmentation and Loading Protocols"

There is no doubt that augmentative procedures are common in the daily practice. For the narrow alveolar ridge, there is various alveolar extension, plastic procedures allowing increase the width of the ridge with many limitations.

However, augmentative procedures are successful and dependent on different host response and definitely the surgical approach. The presenter will demonstrate different concepts of therapy and will address the biological concepts besides the management of complications. The surgical steps and the requirements for the success are here discussed presenting also the opportunity of treatment using different loading protocols. Special focus on the esthetic guidelines and the treatment planning according to the smile line of the patient will be performed. The management of the insufficient width as well as the increase in the height in the posterior and anterior parts of the jaws will be demonstrated.
