HelpAge established an OPA in five villages outside Jacobabad city.Allipul is one village. Through the OPA, HelpAge distributed cash grants to the older people in the village, and distributed relief items such as hygiene kits and mobility aids. Most of the people living in this village are landless haree (peasants). They work on the land around the village which belongs to large-scale landowners. Most of the land was destroyed by the flood and very little is currently cultivatable. Most of the villagers believe it will take 1 to 2 years for the land to recover enough for them to re-plant. Each household lost all its livestock. Most extended families had several cows, valued at 60,000 rupees each (£440) so this was a huge financial loss to the village. In the meantime they must find alternative sources of income. Unlike other provinces in Pakistan, in parts of Sindh women are engaged in manual labour including working in the fields and older women continue to work in the fields as long as their health continues.

Mukhtiar Begum, 63, and Sakina, 53, are the widows of the same man. They live in village Ali Pur in Jacobabad, Sindh.

“Our husband died 20 years ago when the children were really small. When he was alive, he used to take care of us and the education of the children. Now me and Sakina work to make the ends meet. I used to stitch clothes for Rs. 50 (40p) – Rs. 70 (50p) per suit. I stitched around 30 to 40 suits per month. I also teach tuition to the children as I have studied till sixth grade. My dream is to have a school of my own someday where I can teach the children different skills apart from the regular curriculum. If only I had the means…”

“Now my eye sight is getting weaker so it is hard to stitch. Now, I sometimes make samosas and sell them and also sell sweets for the children to earn some money for the family. We need to do something all the time cover our expenses. We don’t have a house anymore so we are also hoping to get some help from somebody to build a house.”

“Sakina works on quilts and manages to produce and sell 6-8 per month for Rs. 250 (2 pounds) – Rs. 500 (4 pounds), depending on the size. This is how we manage to get food and meet our daily expenses. The money is usually spent on buying stationary, books etc for the children’s education. Rest of it is spent on buying food. The little that we save is kept for emergencies and to prepare dowry for the daughters.”

“The floods affected us badly as we lost one buffalo and hens to the floodwaters. The sewing machine also does not work anymore. Our children suffered from fever and vomit due to the poor conditions after the flood… Fever, malaria and vomit have been some of the common diseases in the village after the flood.”

“The food prices have greatly risen in the past few months. We hardly ever get to have meat as it is very expensive. The price of oil used to be Rs. 100 (80p) and now it’s Rs. 150 (1 pound) per liter. We usually cook potatoes that cost around Rs. 20 and were for Rs. 50 (40p) soon after the floods.”

“I received Rs. 15000 from HelpAge International and I have not been able to get anything from that money up till now as I have not been at the best of my health. Some of the amount was spent on getting medicines and treatment for my stomach disease and cough… I am planning to buy a sewing machine from this money and then stitch clothes. My sewing machine doesn’t work anymore. We have also received ration cards and get food from the regular monthly distribution in the village.”

Founded in 1701, Marsh’s Library is one of the very few 18th century buildings left in Dublin.

Best described as Ireland’s first public library Marsh’s Library is located within the grounds of St. Patrick’s Cathedral, the library contains 16th century (and much earlier) books, some with comments (in the margins) by Dean Swift and others, and many still resting in their original shelf position since 1709.

Marsh’s library celebrated its 300th anniversary in 2001. The library contains over 25,000 books relating to the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, covering medicine, law, science, travel, navigation, mathematics, music, surveying and classical literature. The full library catalogue is available for searching.

The library which contains over 25,000 books is open to the public but scholars and students are especially welcome.
